Luísa Correia Pereira Portugues, 1945-2009

Luísa Correia Pereira (1945–2009, Portuguese) was born in Lisbon and began practising art while living in Brazil during a period working for the World Expo in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1960s. Awarded a fellowship by the Gulbenkian Foundation, she relocated to Paris in the late 1960s, where she explored environmental cosmologies, literature and philosophy across large-scale canvases, while also developing techniques in grattage, collage and watercolour. She returned to Lisbon after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, where critics described her as one of the nation’s enfants terribles. A major retrospective of her work was held at CAM Gulbenkian in 1995. Her presentation in Dubai marks the first occasion that her work is exhibited publicly in Asia. She died in Lisbon in 2009.
