Zeinab AlHashemi Emarati, b. 1985
Zeinab Alhashemi is a leading Emirati conceptual artist recognised for her site-specific installations and monumental public artworks. Her practice reflects on the dramatic transformation of the UAE’s landscape in the wake of rapid urbanisation and industrial growth. Through a distinctive approach to materiality and form, Alhashemi constructs immersive environments that challenge perceptions of place, often blurring the lines between the organic and the manufactured to underscore humanity’s evolving relationship with the land.
She reimagines locally sourced and industrial materials through contemporary sculptural techniques, drawing inspiration from the cultural heritage and shifting geographies of the region. Her work has been exhibited in globally recognised art cities and featured in major exhibitions, art fairs, and museums. She has completed significant public and private commissions throughout the GCC.
ARTIST STATEMENT
As a conceptual artist, I am deeply fascinated by Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection, the idea that intelligent species evolve by selecting traits that best suit their environment. This process of adaptation is not only crucial to the evolution of all species, but it also serves as a fundamental force in shaping our world. I believe that the principles of natural selection extend far beyond biology, influencing diverse spheres such as business, culture, and society.
My visual language is rooted in the philosophy of adaptation, where structure meets disruption. Using grids, industrial textures, and regional materials, I reflect on how humans transform and are transformed by their environment. Each work is a portal between the manufactured and the organic.
