Mohamed Monaiseer Egypt, b. 1989

B. 1989

Mohammed Monaiseer explores heritage craft and delves into mystical and transcendental concepts such as alchemy, metaphysics, and oral histories in his drawings and paintings. The obsessive repetition in his work comments on the potency of words or figures when multiplied and reproduced to the point of excess. The raw, shroud-like forms of fabric, canvas, and paper contribute to the ethereal notions of parapsychology, human consciousness, and spirit that Monaiseer explores. For him, this extensive handiwork is akin to ritual, with the repetitions transforming into meditations.

Monaiseer holds a BA in Educational Art and a Diploma from Cairo University. He has attended several artist residency programs, including Can Serrat, El Bruc (2023), La Place, Barcelona (2019), Delfina Foundation, London (2019), and MASS Alexandria, Alexandria (2016).

He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including TEFAF Maastricht in the Netherlands (2023), Silent Rhythm at Unit 7 in London (2022), Art d’Egypte: Reimagined Narratives on Moez Street in Cairo (2019), Naptha at Khuzam Palace in Jeddah (2019), Art d’Egypte: Nothing Vanishes, Everything Transforms at Manial Palace in Cairo (2018), Nest at Al-Riwaq Gallery in Bahrain (2017), and Blind Date at Sfeir-Semler Gallery in Beirut (2017).

Monaiseer has also held solo exhibitions, including Adrift in the Labyrinth of a Parallel Mind at Athr Gallery in Jeddah (2019), Taxidermy Dreams at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai (2019), and another version of this exhibition at Townhouse Gallery in Cairo (2018). His previous solo exhibitions also include Barzakh at Safarkhan Gallery in Cairo (2015) and Muted at Safarkhan Gallery in Cairo (2014).
