Benz has been produced in dialogue with another work by Al Lamki, Eau de Cologne, 2022, a piece that meditates upon the excavation of the Jebel Hafeet mountain during the 1980s by German construction workers. The pathways that they carved out of the mountain offered visitors access to the summit by car for the first time. The title, Benz, makes reference to the German automobile manufacturer, Mercedes Benz, and throws up ideas about luxury, consumption, accessibility and human interaction with the natural environment. Here, the artist has layered multiple media - oil, natural pigment, gesso, ink and pastel - upon bedsheets - media which have come to regularly contribute to his practice.
