In Khaled Zaki's sculptures from his ongoing Resurrection series, developed as Egyptian society rebuilt, stone is approached as a productive force in a moment of uncertainty. Zaki carves into travertine marble, a material associated with permanence, and draws from it fragmented bodily forms that register collapse while reaching towards reconstruction, the body reconfigured as a monument in process. Surfaces absorb the marks of time, accumulated experience, where fissures and erosion register duration. Zaki works through a process of revelation, allowing the figure to be released from within the mass, as though its form precedes the act of carving. These bodies in suspension suggest a moment of renewal and rising.8
