A woman sits on a kind of bench, bent downwards with an arm towards her feet as if adjusting something such as a piece of clothing, painted in shifting layers and marks and lines, suggesting a vulnerability and being in her own thoughts, within a deep blue space that echoes lighter colours, made with rapid marks within long vertical shapes that heighten a sense of the small scale of the figure and the sense of the room having height and a kind of spatial grandeur, which contrasts with the intimacy of the gesture and pose of the woman who is painted as if she belongs in the space, with an awareness she may be belonging unknowingly or knowingly and with conflicted notions of her sense of belonging.
