Across the two panels, loosely rendered forms suggest hands, creatures, plant matter and architectural elements, the whole distributed across a warm, near-white ground with the quality of a field observed in diffuse light. El-Kadhi Brown's title invokes a familiar idiom of natural explanation while the painting itself refuses clarity, holding its subject in the ambiguous space between recognition and invention.1
